Nomadic Material Heritage Project

This Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (EMKP) project documents textile and animal hide crafts in Western Mongolia, with a focus on endangered making practices among minority groups in Bayan-Ulgii and Khovd provinces. Our project takes the documentation of production techniques as a starting point in the documentation of the multivalent roles of material knowledge in pastoral nomadic society, linking craft production to practices of mobile animal husbandry and herder sociality.

Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation Project

The Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) project at the American Center for Mongolian Studies aimed to improve the outlook for archaeological textiles held in Mongolian institutions by providing specialized training and mentorship to cultural heritage professionals. In addition, our team undertook research and conservation treatments on an important Medieval textile, relying as much as possible on locally available resources and infrastructure in order to provide a sustainable model for Mongolian conservation initiatives going forward.
